La fripe – call it retro, vintage or merely old – Paris is the place to find it.

Designers have always looked to the past for inspiration and with the likes of Kate Moss, Sarah Jessica Parker and Sienna Miller regularly in retro, vintage –or la fripe as they call it in Paris – is fast becoming synonymous with trendsetting, glamour and style.
Whether you’re looking for a statement-making accessory, budget-blowing couture or just love the thrill of unearthing a bargain, Paris doesn’t disappoint. From flea markets and funky stores where rummaging is all part of the fun, to über-elegant boutiques and appointment-only studios, Paris is heaven for girls (and guys) with retro style.

old-school store KiliwatchFor lovers of the cheap ‘n’ cheerful, head to Guerrisold, close to the Clignancourt flea market. Perennially popular with young Parisians, Guerrisold carries a good selection of 70s and 80s retro – and a fair amount of tat. More 1980s retro can be found nearby at funky Wochdom, apparently a favourite of local resident Jarvis Cocker. Described by London’s listings weekly Time Out as a ‘’temple to vintage gear’’, there are two Wochdoms opposite each other, with clothing, shoes and accessories from the 1920s – along with an outlet in Tokyo. Prices are reasonable – shoes and dress start at €50 and coats from €100.

Another name in Parisian vintage cool is Kiliwatch just north of Les Halles. Glossy fashion mags sit alongside new and retro stock – which doesn’t always come cheap. It’s fab for vintage leather jackets and boots. For a caffeine kick, refuel next door at the equally-hip Le Café before strolling to Iglaine. The atmosphere is more charm than cool and the selection of vintage clothing and accessories is eclectic. Prices start from as little as €20, though a 1960s YSL dress will cost near €500.

If urban cool leaves you cold, but you lust over Lanvin and drool over Dior, try Come on Eileen in the Bastille. With an incredible three floors of quality stock sourced from all over the world – and prices that start as low as €30 – even the fussiest fashionistas will be content.
Common to virtually every vintage outlet the world over is an owner who is passionate about fashion. La Belle Epoque in the Marais is no exception. This small shop has a beautiful selection of couture and non-label items from the 1900s through to the 1950s. Prices start from €40, though expect to pay a great deal more for names like Dior and YSL. In the same street you’ll find Quidam de Revel, one of the best vintage shops in the city, with a stunning collection of haute-couture and prêt-à-porter clothing, accessories and shoes from the 1920s through to the 1980s. Particularly strong on Parisian names and conceptual designers of the 1960s and 1970s, Quidam de Revel is for the serious shopper only.

be after a trip to retro hauntNo feature on la fripe is complete without reference to a flea market. If you go to only one, make it Saint-Ouen, open Saturday-Monday from 9.30am to 6pm. Two must-see stands here are Falbalas which stocks a sumptuous collection of well-priced vintage and handmade retro-style shoes, and Olwen Forest for drop-dead gorgeous art deco jewellery by Schiaparelli, Chanel, Josef of Hollywood and Miriam Haskell. Prices from around €200.
Retro Rules
1. BE PATIENT. The art of finding that special something takes time, and rooting and rummaging is all part of the pleasure.
2. BE REALISTIC. Couture for peanuts is a thing of the past, though there are still plenty of glorious goodies out there.
3. BE SENSIBLE. Always try it on if you can. For flea markets and the like, pop a tape measure into your bag.
4. BE HONEST. You may love the look, but if it doesn’t suit or doesn’t fit, don’t buy it.
5. BE CAREFUL. Vintage can mean cheap – but it can also mean sky high.

Ob Sie nun nach einem Accessoire mit dem gewissen Etwas suchen, in Haute-Couture investieren wollen oder einfach nur die Schnäppchenjagd lieben – Paris wird Sie nicht enttäuschen. Denn mit Flohmärkten und bizarren Geschäften, in denen Sie nach Herzenslust stöbern können, bis hin zu superedlen Boutiquen und Modeateliers, die nur nach Terminvereinbarung ihre Pforten öffnen, ist Paris das Retro-Paradies für Sie & Ihn.
Wer es günstig und knallig liebt, sollte es im Guerrisold nahe dem Flohmarkt an der Porte de Clignancourt versuchen. Mit einer guten Auswahl an Originalstücken aus den siebziger und achtziger Jahren – und auch einer Menge Schrott – erfreut sich das Guerrisold bei jungen Parisern ungebrochener Beliebtheit. Noch mehr 80er-Retro bietet das schräge Wochdom, das ganz offensichtlich zu den Favoriten des Wahlparisers Jarvis Cocker zählt.

Im britischen Szene-Magazin Time Out zum „Tempel für Vintage-Fans“ gekürt, gibt es in der französischen Metropole gleich zwei gegenüberliegende Wochdoms voller Kleidung, Schuhe und Accessoires der zwanziger Jahre – und dazu noch ein Outlet in Tokio. Mit Schuhen und Kleidung ab €50 und Mänteln ab €100 bewegen sich die Preise im erträglichen Rahmen.

Eine weitere Anlaufstelle für ultimative Vintage-Coolness ist das Kiliwatch nördlich von Les Halles. Mode aus Hochglanzmagazinen gesellt sich hier Seite an Seite mit Neu- und Retro-Ware, die nicht unbedingt günstig sein muss. Wer alte Lederjacken und Stiefel sucht, ist hier richtig. Für einen Koffein-Kick empfehlen wir das benachbarte und gleichermaßen angesagte Le Café, dann können Sie den Marsch nach Iglaine beginnen. In eher charmanter als cooler Atmosphäre stößt man hier auf eine Auswahl an Vintage-Kleidung und -Accessoires, die ihresgleichen sucht. Obwohl hier schon für €20 etwas zu bekommen ist, müssen Sie dennoch für ein Kleid von Yves Saint Laurent aus den sechziger Jahren knapp €500 hinlegen.
Wenn Sie das alles kalt lässt und es Sie nach Lanvin und Dior verlangt, sollten Sie unbedingt dem Come on Eileen in der Bastille einen Besuch abstatten. Über drei Stockwerke verteilt finden Sie hier unglaubliche Qualitätsware aus der ganzen Welt – und das bei Preisen ab €30. Hier dürften selbst die wählerischsten Fashionistas zufrieden sein.

Zu fast jedem Vintage-Outlet auf der Welt gehört auch ein modebegeisterter Eigentümer. Das La Belle Epoque im Marais ist da keine Ausnahme. Dieses kleine Geschäft bietet eine wunderschöne Auswahl an Couture und No-Name-Stücken vom Beginn des letzten Jahrhunderts bis zu den fünfziger Jahren. Die Einstiegspreise liegen zwar bei €40, allerdings sollten Sie sich darauf einstellen, für Marken wie Dior oder Yves Saint Laurent wesentlich mehr hinblättern zu müssen. In der gleichen Straße finden Sie mit dem Quidam de Revel einen der besten Vintage-Shops der Stadt mit einer atemberaubenden Kollektion von Haute-Couture- und Prêt-à-Porter-Stücken, Accessoires und Schuhen aus den zwanziger bis achtziger Jahren. Das Quidam de Revel setzt seinen Schwerpunkt auf Pariser Designer und konzeptionelle Modeschöpfer der sechziger und siebziger Jahre und gilt als erste Adresse für alle, die das Besondere lieben.
Beim Thema la fripe darf ein Tipp für den Flohmarkt natürlich nicht fehlen. Wenn Sie nur einen Trödel besuchen wollen, empfehlen wir den Flohmarkt von Saint-Ouen, der samstags bis montags von 9.30 Uhr bis 18 Uhr geöffnet hat. Ein Muss sind hier die Stände von Falbalas – mit einer umfassenden Sammlung an Vintage-Schuhen zu recht angemessenen Preisen und handgemachtem Schuhwerk im Retro-Stil – und von Olwen Forest, wo Sie wunderschönen Art-Deco-Schmuck von Schiaparelli, Chanel, Josef of Hollywood und Miriam Haskell erstehen können. Die Preise bewegen sich um die €200.
Retro-Regeln
1. ÜBEN SIE SICH IN GEDULD. Die Kunst, etwas Besonderes zu finden, braucht Zeit. Das Stöbern und Suchen gehört mit zum Vergnügen.
2. BLEIBEN SIE REALISTISCH. Couture zu Spottpreisen war einmal, aber dennoch warten zahlreiche Schnäppchen auf Sie.
3. KAUFEN SIE MIT KÖPFCHEN. Probieren Sie alles möglichst an. Für Flohmärkte und dergleichen empfehlen wir ein Maßband im Handgepäck.
4. BLEIBEN SIE AUF DEM TEPPICH. Auch wenn Sie einen Look noch so sehr lieben – wenn er Ihnen nicht steht, sollten Sie die Finger davon lassen.
5. KAUFEN SIE MIT BEDACHT. Vintage-Mode kann für wenig Geld zu haben sein, aber auch zu astronomischen Preisen.
