My Travels

WORDS BY JO GIFFORD

Free-spirited Italian artist Filippo Minelli talks voyages and Vuitton trunks

Italian urban artist Filippo Minelli is one of the hottest rising stars in the contemporary art scene with his site-specific graffiti installations and street art. A self-styled “idiot son you would like to have,” he is a voice to be reckoned within the art world and is quite a character to boot.

What is your earliest memory of going on holiday?

I remember long summer holidays in France with my parents. I used to stay lost in the countryside for months, eating good food and swimming as much as I could.

What has been your best holiday?

Each holiday has its charms, but I remember with affection my last trip to Paris for Nuit Blanche (taking place on the 4th and 5th October this year), the annual all-night festival. It was amazing to see all the city’s cultural spots open at the same time as the clubs!

What do holidays mean to you?

When I travel, I always find inspiration, and I travel to create my public art. Everybody thinks I spend most of my time on holidays, but the reality is that I work more abroad than when I am home.

What kind of luggage do you use?

I am a proud backpacker in this period of my life, but if I didn’t have to jump from old buses to dusty trains all the time, I would prefer to have an old Louis Vuitton trunk.

Where will you go next?

The countries of Eastern Europe are on my list. I plan to go to Prague soon to see how much it has changed since the last time I saw it, when I was 9 years old.

Boutique or five star luxury?

I usually rent apartments when abroad so that I have my own headquarters to plan everything I need to do. In luxury hotels you can’t have your own kitchen, and as my second love is cooking, I don’t appreciate that.

I would love to go back to…

Manchester. I had such a great time there, and the city is so human-sized and very easy to navigate. Manchester has everything you can find in every big city, but without the noise, busy people and unaffordable prices.
