Weekend in Prague

Words by Julie O’Shea

From strolling along cobbled streets to devouring Czech cuisine, make every second count in the Golden City

Prague, by all accounts, is stunning. No matter where you are in the city, there is always something fabulous to see and do – around practically every bend. From its stunning architecture and historic neighborhoods to its rollicking nightlife and world-famous brews, Central Europe’s sparkling Golden City will hold you captive from just about the second you land here until well after your third or fourth pint.

First things first. Grab a spot at Miss Sophie’s, a quiet and cosy hostel that’s walking distance from all the city centre action. Start the night off with a drink at Vinárna U Sudu, a maze-like pub frequented by locals and hidden from the usual tourist fare. Next, head to Klub architekt? for traditional Czech cuisine at reasonable prices, followed by thick hot chocolate and vanilla ice cream at Café Louvre, truly a Prague institution.

Start the following morning early with a stroll through the cobbled streets of Staré M?sto, making sure to stop and admire one of the city’s most striking landmarks – Church of Our Lady Before Tyn, which dominates Old Town Square. The surrounding alleyways provide some excellent window shopping opportunities. Check out Manufaktura if you’re in the mood for beer shampoo! To score unique street artist swag, head over to Havelská street’s outdoor bazaar or cross Charles Bridge, where you can browse matted photography and colourful magnets.

Unwind with a glass of home-grown wine in the Little Quarter’s intimate, smoke-free Veronský d?m before exploring Prague Castle and the impressive, stained-glass St Vitus Cathedral and dainty Golden Lane. Call ahead for a table at the always-packed Cantina. The Mexican favourite serves the best guacamole and quesadillas in town and is a must. Afterwards, cross the street to PopoCafePetl Music Club for some sangria and late-night dancing.

Ease into Sunday with eggs and bacon at Bohemia Bagel, a popular expat hangout that provides bottomless cups of coffee. Then step back in time with a visit to Prague’s famed Jewish museum and cemetery. And of course, top off the trip with a final round of sweet Czech beer at Pivovarský d?m.
